Lok Sabha passes resolution for peace in Kashmir

New Delhi: The Lok Sabha on Friday unanimously passed a resolution on the situation in Jammu and Kashmir and pledged to work to restore the confidence of the people and the youth in particular.

The resolution, read out by Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, expressed “deepest sense of anguish” on the prolonged turbulence in the Kashmir Valley and stressed the need to take urgent steps to bring normalcy.

But there cannot be any compromise on the “unity, integrity and national security”, the resolution said.

It appealed to all sections of people in Jammu and Kashmir and also other parts of the country to help restore peace and normalcy in the state.

The Kashmir Valley is on the boil for the past five weeks after the killing of rebel commander Burhan Wani. At least 56 people have been killed in clashes between security forces and protesters since July 8.

The valley has been under a security lockdown amid shutdown call by separatist leaders. Educational institutes, shops, businesses and offices have remained closed since the unrest began.
