Local boy Dhoni wins praise as Jharkhand celebrates

Ranchi, April 03: This hometown of Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni in Jharkhand glittered at night as he led his team in lifting the World Cup after 28 years.

Children, youth and elderly came onto streets to celebrate the Indian victory in Mumbai. The joy of people of Ranchi increased manifold as local boy and India captain hit the winning runs in the match against Sri Lanka.

“Dhoni tune kar dala” (Dhoni you did it) and “Jharkhand ka Lal, India ko dila diya World Cup” (son of Jharkhand has won the World Cup for India) were some of the slogans shouted by people in Ranchi.

Not only Ranchi but the entire Jharkhand witnessed Diwali-like celebrations after India won the World Cup.

Happy supporters, with the national colours on their faces, distributed sweets and danced on drums beats and Bollywood songs like “Chak De India”.

“Our happiness has multiplied as India won the World Cup under local boy Dhoni. He played the captain’s knock and his six took India to victory,” said Sailen, a resident of Ranchi.

Jharkhand Chief Minister Arjun Munda also congratulated the Indian cricket team.

For an India victory, Sonu Chauhan, a resident of the coal city of Dhanbad, kept fast, lying on his back and keeping nine kalash (traditional pots) on his chest.

In Ranchi, Dhoni’s elder brother Narendra offered special prayers at the Deori temple, dedicated to one of the many forms of Goddess Durga.
