(Siasat News) Dept. of Translation Studies of Maulana Azad National Urdu University organized Wikipedia (Urdu) workshop on 4th March. It was felt that for the development of languages it is essential to make them compatible with the modern technology. Information Technology has opened many avenues for the development of languages. These thoughts were expressed by Mr. Syed Muzzamiluddin, Project Director of Centre for Internet and Society, Bangalore. This workshop was organized with an objective to enrich Urdu material for Wikipedia and also to make necessary modifications in the existing material of Urdu Wikipedia.
Prof. Mohammed Zafaruddin, Head of the Dept. of Translation Studies told that the Dept. of Translation Studies wants its students to impart training for writing material for Urdu Wikipedia so that Urdu could be made compatible with the modern technology. Mr. Vishnu Vardhan addressed the students online from Bangalore and told that Wikipedia has become an important source of communicating information. Millions of people throughout the world are getting information through Wikipedia in many languages. Urdu is an important language of the world, the speakers of which are spread all over the world. In view of its importance, it is obligatory on the part of Urdu speakers to preserves their language and culture by using Wikipedia and they should also extend their co-operation in building the resources of Urdu Wikipedia.
Mr. Muzzamil apprised the students to use Wikipedia for eliciting information, to enter into it and to edit or modify the existing material. At the end of the lectures, workshop started in which the students of the Dept. introduce their material on selected topics. The students had already opened their accounts in Wikipedia. Present on the occasion were Dr. Mohammed Khaled Mubbashir-Uz-Zafar, Associate Professor, Dr. Mohammed Junaid Zakir, Dr. Khakashan Lateef (Asst. Professors), Prof. Syed Khwaja Moinuddin and Dr. Shaik Sadi Arshad (Translator). Convener of the workshop, Dr. Faheemuddin Ahmed, proposed vote of thanks.
