Lightning kills nine in Bihar

Purnia/Nawada (Bihar), July 10: Nine persons were killed and five others sustained burn injuries after being struck by lightning in Bihar’s Purnia, Nawada, Madhepura and Araria districts which experienced heavy monsoon rains today.

Purnia District Magistrate N Shravan Kumar said while one person each was killed in Rupaouli and Jamgarh, lightning claimed two other lives in Dhamdaha in the district.

In Nawada, three persons were killed and another was injured when they were struck by lightning in a field near Pakribarawa village in the district, officials said.

One death each was also reported from Shankarpur and Araria, officials said.

Four persons were injured at Muraliganj in Madhepura district after being struck by lightning.

Meanwhile, the state government has announced an ex gratia of Rs one lakh to the kin of the deceased.
