Vijayawada, August 23: Congress MP Lagadapati Rajagopal on Sunday sought the lifting of restrictions on the number of statues of former chief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy to be installed in each district.
Mr Rajagopal told media persons that the restrictions imposed by the Congress High Command that only one statue of the late leader should be installed in each district is against the wishes of the people. The Vijayawada MP said that people of every nook and corner of every village in the state desire to install a statue and they themselves are coming forward to do so.
The MP said that the High Command’s directive is not justifiable and appealed it to reconsider its decision and lift the restrictions on the number of statues.
Mr Rajagopal’s statement assumes significance in the wake of Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s directives to party MLAs and MPs to distance themselves away from Kadapa MP YS Jaganmohan Reddy’s Odarpu Yatra and also limit the number of YSR statues to one in each district.
The Congress president had expressed her desire that the Odarpu Yatra be a party affair through her political advisor Ahmed Patel.
