In a major relief to former Indian skipper Mohammad Azharuddin, the Andhra Pradesh High Court on Thursday termed the life ban imposed on him illegal.
While responding to a plea by the former Indian captain in a match-fixing case, a division bench of Andhra High Court said that the ban was unsustainable by law.
Azhar, who was banned for life from playing all forms of cricket in 2000 by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) along with some other cricketers, appealed against the life ban imposed on him, asking the court to lift the ban.
Azaharuddin, an elegant right-hand batsman from Hyderabad, played 99 Tests and scored 6215 runs at an average of 45. He also played 334 one-dayers, accumulating 9378 runs at an average of 36.92.
