‘Libyans will reject NATO after Gaddafi’

Libya, August 23: The Libyan people will not tolerate NATO forces taking control of Libya’s internal affairs after the anticipated downfall of the country’s embattled dictator Muammar Gaddafi, an analyst says.

“I think a new circle of violence would take place even if Gaddafi would leave Tripoli and if Tripoli would be connected to Benghazi,” political analyst Tahsin al-Halabi told Press TV.

“I am sure that the Libyan people would not tolerate the presence of the military forces in Libya,” he added.

NATO has conducted thousands of airstrikes on Libya since it assumed control of the military campaign in the North African country late March.

The airstrikes by the Western military alliance have killed many civilians as well as opposition fighters.

Al-Halabi’s remarks came as the Libyan fighters swept into the heart of the capital Tripoli early Monday and seized control of much of the city without facing significant resistance from regime forces.

On Tuesday, Fresh fighting erupted between Libyan opposition fighters and government troops near Gaddafi’s Bab al-Aziziyah compound in Tripoli.

Meanwhile, Libya’s Transitional National Council (TNC) has announced that Gaddafi will be tried in a local court if he chooses to surrender.
