Libyan court postpones trial of Gaddafi-era officials

A Libyan court Sunday postponed to Nov 30 the trial of Muammar Gaddafi-era officials at the request of the defence lawyers.

Thirty-one out of 37 defendants were present in the court Sunday. Local channel Al-Nabaa aired the ninth session of the court, Xinhua reported.

Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, son of Muammar Gaddafi, who was detained in Zintan, was absent due to the security situation.

The judge decided to postpone the trial to Nov 30 at the request of defence attorneys to complete the rest of the evidence procedures.

The defendants face several charges, mainly genocide during the 2011 uprising, formation of armed battalions to suppress civilians, creating rivalry between Libyans and tearing the social fabric, along with supporting and funding the former administration and financial and administrative corruption.

A number of Gaddafi-era officials, including his two sons Saadi and Seif al-Islam, are in Libyan prisons on several charges, including killing, suppression of demonstrations, embezzlement of public money and forming armed battalions to suppress demonstrators of February 2011.
