Tripoli, March 13: A military spokesman says forces loyal to long-time ruler Muammar Gaddafi will soon drive out fighters from strategic towns held by opposition forces.
Spokesman Colonel Milad Hussein told a news conference in Tripoli on Sunday that Libyan army was “marching to cleanse the rest of the country.”
“Our raids are forcing the terrorists to flee. We have liberated Zawiyah, Uqayla, Ras Lanuf and Brega and the army is advancing to liberate the rest of the regions,”
“Tonight or tomorrow you will get [the] news,” he added.
The remark comes as fighting is raging on between troops loyal to Gaddafi and revolutionary fighters in different parts of the country.
Latest reports say Gaddafi’s forces have gained the upper hand in Brega after shelling the eastern city for several hours.
The revolutionary forces were also forced to retreat from the oil-rich city of Ras Lanuf on Saturday following a week of deadly clashes.
Pro-and anti-regime forces are locked in intense fighting for control of several other eastern cities.
Meanwhile, the Gaddafi regime has renewed accusations that those behind the revolution come from abroad.
The colonel has recently claimed that some of the revolutionaries are al-Qaeda members released from the US prison at Guantanamo Bay.
