Leila al-Ghandour, an 8-month-old Palestinian baby is the ‘face of Gaza carnage’

GAZA: Leila Anwar al-Ghandoour, an eight-month-old Palestinian baby girl died after inhaling tear gas becomes the ‘face of Gaza carnage’.

Baby Leila was one of the youngest of 63 Palestinians killed at the Gaza-Israel border during the major protests over the US’ embassy move to Jerusalem.

In her final embrace, Leila’s mother Mariam al-Ghandour, herself only 17, hugs the motionless body of her daughter tightly with tears rolling down her face. “Let her stay with me, It is too early for her to go,” her mother cried, pressing the baby’s body to her chest.

“The Israelis killed her,” she sobs, reported sbs.com.

“She is not the first martyr for Palestine and she won’t be the last. Her sacrifice is for Jerusalem and for the homeland,” her father, Anwar al-Ghandour, said.

According to a report in Al-Jazeera, Leila and her family were at the al-Shati district in Western Gaza. As per media reports, the little girl’s mother had a dentist appointment “so she left Leila with her brothers at home”.

When the infant began crying, her 12-year-old uncle Ammar confused and accidentally took her towards the protest area in order to locate his sister. “My little brother took her and went to the border,” she said.

Sobbing uncontrollably, Ammar said, “So I took her with me on the bus.” He added: “I feel I am the reason [for her death].”
