Legislative assembly adjourned without any business

The budget session of the State Legislative Assembly failed to take up any business on Tuesday following pandemonium and uproar created by the opposition parties.

As soon as the House met on Tuesday, Telugu Desam Party members, divided into two groups, started shouting slogans with one group demanded Telangana resolution and the other discussion on liquor scam. The Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen members demanded discussion on alleged harassment by the City Police which forced a youth, Mohammad Aqeel, to commit suicide. The TRS and BJP wanted Telangana resolution in the House. CPI MLAs wanted discussions on desecration of Dr BR Ambedkar statues in the State while the CPM gave an adjournment on the attack on former MP P Madhu in the Old City on Monday.

Speaker Nadendla Manohar disallowed all the adjournment motions and requested the members to take up the regular business. However, the opposition members started raising slogans and amidst din, the Speaker adjourned the House for half-an-hour.

Similar scenes were witnessed when the House re-assembled at 12.40 pm. The MIM MLAs Ahmed Balala, Ahmed Pasha Quadri, Mumtaz Ahmed Khan and Virasat Rasool Khan went to the Speaker’s podium and started raising slogans against police harassment on Muslim youth. MIM floor leader Akbaruddin Owaisi was standing near his seat. The TRS members too went close to the podium.

Meanwhile, Home Minister P Sabitha Indira Reddy announced that she would conduct a meeting on Friday to discuss the issue of rowdy sheets of Muslim youth and cases against the Telangana students. However, her announcement failed to pacify the MIM legislators who continued to protest and raise slogans. Later, the Speaker instructed that the Home Minister to hold the meeting on this issue on Friday.

With no signs of restoration of order, the Speaker adjourned the House for the day. Except for Governor’s address and presentation of budget for 2012-13, the legislative assembly could not take up any business so far. (INN)
