Hyderabad, February 09:Expressing serious concern over continuance of torture by police and other agencies, legal experts today advocated on the need for initiating measures to prevent torture.
Participating in a session on ‘Commonwealth Human Rights Torture and Death in Custody’ at the ongoing 17th Commonwealth Law Conference here, the legal experts lamented that even though torture is prohibited under international law and the domestic laws of most countries, there have been repeated reports of torture and similar ill-treatment.
Senior Advocate and former Solicitor-General of India, T R Andhyarujina said, “Torture has almost become legalised and the excuse being the countries are in an age of terrorism. A stage has come where leading democracies which are committed to ‘Rule of Law’ are in practical ways legalising torture.
