Legal battle for Rs 10 won after 19 yrs and 148 hearings

It took nearly 20 years and 148 hearings in courts for N K Gupta to win the legal battle for a compensation of Rs 10. Gupta who himself is an advocate is entitled to be compensated for his illegal arrest and detention as well as for the flagrant violation of law and use of force against him.

Gupta asserted that it was not the matter of Rs 10 but was primarily a fight for his fundamental rights. It was a fight, he claims, against the humiliation and torture he had to face during all this period.

According to details, on February 21, 1993, some police officials came to Gupta’s residence in Chandni Chowk area and picked him up without showing any warrant. Subsequently, he was moved to the Tihar prison.

Gupta, a local BJP leader, had come to know that he was picked up by the police as ruling party did not want him to participate in a rally on February 25. Later, Gupta had filed a suit on March 31, 1993. Gupta had claimed the symbolic damages of Rs 10 only.
