Left Front wins in Tripura for fifth straight term, Congress retains power in Meghalaya

gartala, Feb. 28 (ANI): The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M)-led Left Front has stormed to power in Tripura for a record fifth straight term by winning 50 out of 60 seats, while the Congress has emerged as the single largest party in Meghalaya by winning 29 out of 60 seats of the state assembly.

In the 2008 assembly election, the Congress had bagged 25 seats in Meghalaya and has formed government with United Democratic Party, which has won eight seats this time.

P. A. Sangma’s National People”s Party (NPP) and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) have won two seats each.

Thirteen independent candidates have also won from their constituencies.

On the other hand, the ruling Left Front in Tripura has stormed back to power for the fifth consecutive term since 1993 getting huge majority under leadership of 64-year-old Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, bagging 50 seats of the 60-member assembly.

CPI-M, who contested in 55 seats, has bagged 49, while coalition partner CPI has won one seat.

The Left Front has increased its tally by one from 49 in 2008 paving the way for installation of its government for the seventh time since 1967 when the first assembly polls were held.

The Congress, which contested 48 seats managed to retain 10, but the allies- INPT and National Conference of Tripura have unable to win even one seat.

In Nagaland, the ruling Naga People’s Front (NPF) has returned to power for a third consecutive term with an absolute majority, winning 37 seats in the 60-member assembly.

Congress has managed to win eight seats, while the NCP has won four seats.

Independent and others have won remaining 10 seats. (ANI)
