Baghdad, October 18:At least one civilian was killed and nine were injured when a bomb blast tore through a parking lot in the central Iraqi city of Iskandariya Sunday, police said.
The blast in the city roughly 100 km south of Baghdad destroyed many surrounding shops and cars, police told DPA.
The region had mostly been quiet in recent months, though the area remains the site of sporadic, deadly attacks.
A bomb planted in a cemetery in the town Sep 20 killed one person and injured four family members.
The family had gone to the cemetery to visit the grave of a relative on the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr.
To the north of the country Sunday, a cement magnate narrowly escaped an assassination attempt against him in Mosul, some 400 km north of the capital, police there told DPA.
Hussein Mohsin Abid, general director of Iraq’s Northern Cement Company and one of the city’s leading businessmen, was unharmed when a car bomb exploded near his motorcade in the city, but two of his bodyguards were injured in the blast.
Mosul and its environs are among the most ethnically diverse areas in Iraq, but also remain among the most violent. Insurgents continue to launch deadly attacks in the region almost daily.
