Hyderabad, July 04: Underlining the importance of paying taxes to the government on time to make the nation financially strong, Justice Anil Ramesh Dave of the Supreme Court has called upon all lawyers and tax practitioners to help the government by making their clients pay taxes and other dues.
“I know the profession of chartered accountancy as I myself practised it for a couple of months. A number of tax practitioners are helping their clients evade tax payment. But it will have a bad impact on the country’s financial condition,”’ said Dave, who was the chief guest at the national tax conference on `Role of Tax Professional in Borderless World’, organised jointly by the All India Federation of Tax Practitioners South Zone and Twin Cities Tax Practitioners Association here today.
The former AP High Court chief justice said that every person who came under taxation should pay the tax to the government without delay and it would help in developing the society. He said that when every businessperson and taxpayer promptly paid taxes, it would enable the government to build more and better infrastructure like roads, power and water which would, in turn, help the business. “Globalisation brings costs and benefits, even for the tax professional. The move towards a borderless world has opened up new opportunities for taxpayers to minimise their overall tax liabilities. Much of the tax planning is legitimate. Good tax planning is driven by the reality of businesses having to operate with increasingly complex laws, particularly those affecting international activities, while at the same time wanting to legally minimise their costs, including tax costs,” Dave said.
ML Patodi, national executive member of All India Federation of Tax Practitioners, said that only a few people keen to pay taxes. “Noncompliance with tax laws reduces the funds available with the government for such services. Also, it is blatantly unfair to the majority of lawabiding taxpayers who must, as a result, bear more than their fair share of the tax bill,” he said
V Ahalada Rao, secretary of the association, said eminent tax professionals conceived the idea of establishing an all India body for tax practitioners to enable them to share the benefits of their learning, experience and knowledge.
Later, justice Dave felicitated some prominent and senior tax practitioners.
