Lawyers boycott court high court over language issue

Chennai, June 18: Work in the principal seat of the Madras High Court here and its Madurai Bench were hit today as lawyers boycotted the courts demanding Tamil be made the official language of the high court.

Work in the high court and sub-ordinate courts in the complex here came to a near standstill as the lawyers kept away from the court in response to the call given by the Madras High Court Advocates’ Association. Only government advocates and some lawyers attended the courts.

The indefinite fast by Kasinatha Bharati and four other advocates over the issue entered second day today. Leaders of various political parties visited the fasting advocates to show their solidarity with them.

The leaders included Tamil Nadu Congress Committee chief K V Thangabalu, Tamil Nationalist movement leader P Nedumaran, state CPI secretary D Pandian, state BJP President Pon Radhakrishnan and AIADMK’s P H Pandian.
