In-laws booked for harassing NRI woman for more dowry

Phagwara: Police here today booked the husband, father-in-law and mother-in-law of a NRI woman for allegedly harassing her for more dowry and forcing her to marry another relative.

Police booked the NRI woman’s husband Parvinder Singh, father-in-law Balbir Singh and mother-in-law Balbir Kaur under various sections of IPC.

Police said that Baljinder of Mauli village, settled permanently in the US, had married off his NRI daughter Komalpreet Kaur to Parvinder from Nangal Majha village on February 20, 2013.

He said that he had spent Rs 20 lakh on the marriage.

Besides, he said he had given other expensive gifts. But her in-laws started demanding a luxury car.

The in-laws also started insisting that Komalpreet should divorce her husband and marry another person from their family so he could also go to the US, he said.

When Komalpreet refused, they told her that they had married her to their son so that another relative could travel to the US after getting a divorce from her.

The in-laws forced her to leave their home. Upon returning to her parental home, she lodged a complaint.
