Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Nabam Tuki today said the law and order situation in the state has significantly improved in the last few years following well-coordinated approach by security forces and government machineries. Taking part in the discussion on motion of thanks on Governor’s address to the house on March 15, Tuki while citing official statistics claimed that crime rate in the state comparatively came down since 2005. To an accusation levelled by Trinamool Congress MLA Laeta Umbrey that entire government including ministers were corrupt, Tuki made point to point clarification on various accusations made by different members participated in the discussion. Umbrey, later said sorry to the chief minister and withdrew his statement saying the accusation was made based on people’s allegations. Umbrey had earlier while terming the law and order situation in the state as grave called the elected leaders not to surrender before the pressure tactics of the students’ organisations. Calling a spade a spade, former chief minister Jarbom Gamlin took a dig at the state government for the deteriorating law and order situation and said that when there was no security to life, how one can claim Arunachal to be a peaceful state. “Superficially we are peaceful but there is undercurrent in several parts of the state,” Gamlin said while adding that despite the state police having the mobile numbers from where SMSes were send to various officers and leaders by a certain underground organisation demanding money, no tangible efforts were made to arrest the persons involved. Gamlin while pointing out at the slow pace of construction of the Arunachal State Hospital at Naharlagun wondered that if the pace of construction continues, establishment of the medical college within the hospital would be a dream. He also suggested the government to ensure regular salary to the teachers working under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan to get quality education. Taking part in the discussion, parliamentary secretary for planning and development Nabam Rebia alleged that political leaders in connivance with students’ organisations were responsible for all sort of agitations including bandh in the state. Rebia went further to add that large scale corruption were detected in the Tax & Excise and Geology and Mining departments as a result of which the state was losing a huge amount of revenue annually. Adviser to chief minister Tako Dabi called for introspection by all elected leaders and advocated that the Centre should adopt a sincere approach to wipe out insurgency problem afflicting the north-eastern states. While demanding constitution of a house committee to study the water level of all the rivers in the state with China proposing to construct dams at Tsanpho, Dabi cautioned of a Third World war on water with Arunachal as the epicentre if the state government and the Centre fail to mull a solution to address the issue.
