The Last Sermon (Khutbah) of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)

The farewell sermon:

Prophet Muhammad (SAWS) delivered his last sermon (Khutbah) on the ninth of Dhul Hijjah (12th and last month of the Islamic year), 10 years after Hijrah (migration from Makkah to Madinah) in the Uranah Valley of mount Arafat. His words were quite clear and concise and were directed to the entire humanity.

Mount Arafat

After praising, and thanking Allah, Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said:

“O People, lend me an attentive ear, for I know not whether after this year, I shall ever be amongst you again. Therefore listen to what I am saying to you very carefully and TAKE THESE WORDS TO THOSE WHO COULD NOT BE PRESENT HERE TODAY.”

• The life and property of every Muslim is a sacred trust
• Hurt no one so that no one may hurt you

• Take full accountability for actions and Allah will also hold you accountable
• Dealing with interest and usury is prohibited
• Be careful of obeying Satan in small matters
• Men have right over women & women have rights over men

• Treat women kindly, they are your partners and committed helpers
• Women must guard their modesty and chastity

• Worship Allah by performing the prescribed prayers, fasting in Ramadan, giving charity and performing Hajj
• Muslims are brothers to one another
• Superiority of one over another is only by piety and good action, not race or color
• No new prophet or religion will come after this
• Follow the Quran & Sunnah and you will never go astray
• It is now your duty to pass on this message to the rest of humanity
