New Delhi, October 19: IITs having large number of students can now get higher amount of non-plan grants from the government, HRD Minister Kapil Sibal said today.
“The non-plan grants to the IITs would be linked to the students’ strength. Larger the IITs, larger the funds,” Sibal told reporters after the meeting of the IIT Council, the highest decision making body for the elite institutes.
The IITs at present are getting block grants from the government under the non-plan allowance head.
The decision assume significance as the IITs have been saying that the block grants are inadequate to meet the rising cost, increase in salary and pension benefits.
The government had released Rs 525 crore on non-plan funds to the IITs each in 2007-08 and 08-09.
Sibal said a committee would be set up to decide the pay structure of the class-three employees.
