Lanka’s Marxist Party to protest against decision to increase taxes

Colombo : Sri Lanka’s Marxist Party, Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), will stage a protest against the government this week over the decision to increase taxes.

Taking potshots at the government, JVP general secretary Tilvin Silva has said imposing heavy taxes on the people is unfair, adding the party will stage a protest on Thursday in Colombo to pressurise the government to reduce taxes.

The government has decided to further increase the vehicle taxes, which will have a huge impact on the vehicle importers.

The government has also increased the unit rate tax on motor cars and three wheelers with more than 1000cc engine capacity from midnight on Thursday.

“We see this decision by the government to increase taxes, as being one that the government has taken in order to reduce their debt burden,” Lanka Page quoted Silva as saying. (ANI)
