Lankan PM condemns assault on journalist, calls for immediate probe

Colombo : Condemning an assault on Professional Web Journalists Association convener Freddy Gamage, Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has asked the Inspector General of Police to commence an immediate investigation into the matter.

Gamage was reportedly assaulted by two people on a motorcycle when he was returning to his vehicle after covering the Negombo Urban Council Meeting yesterday, reports the Colombo Page.

He was struck on his head with a pole and has been admitted to Negombo hospital with head injuries.

Meanhile, the video recording of the CCTV cameras near the Negombo Urban Council complex has been handed over to the police. The Negombo Police have provided security to the victim.

The motive behind the attack is not yet known.

No arrests have been made in connection with this case so far.(ANI)
