Hyderabad: The Langer Houz Lake filled with garbage, weed and water hyacinth. Once clean and free of pollution, the Lake is now a cesspool, slowly turning to a garbage landfill with tons of garbage in it.
A beautification project was taken by the officials and area MLA, 14 years ago, promising that this water body is provided with a sewage treatment plant and a park. However, there is no progress in work seen at the moment, as water hyacinth covers a major portion of the lake, becoming breeding ground for mosquitoes.
The Langer Houz Lake is spread over 40 acres and use to be a water source to the entire Karwan. Commuters and residents of Golconda at risk as they were greeted by foam flying off the Langer Houz Lake every monsoon. This foam leaves stinking smell containing chemicals in it which is causing health issues in the area.
Residents alleged that lake is filled with all kinds of wastage and sewage inflow channels in it poising air and water. Every monsoon the lake is deteriorating, despite repeatedly complaining about the degradation of the Lake ‘No action’ by the civic body and the local leaders.
Madhulika Choudhary a Green Activist who started an NGO Dhruvansh that works on conserving water bodies and the environment is coordinating with the volunteers, who had earlier cleaned and restored the Neknampur Lake and the Yerrakunta lake in Shaikpet.
Through clean-up drives Madhulika along with a group of 20 volunteers trying to save the lake. Mostly IT employees and students joined hands with Madhulika Choudhary from an NGO Dhruvansh is conducting the cleaning drive every weekend from April 23 till July 1. The motley army reaches the lake and gets on with its mission every weekend from 8 am to 10 am.
Speaking to siasat.com Madhulika Choudhary said, “We have been conducting the clean-up drive at the lake along with volunteers, from April 23 with fund support from Novartis, from past 67 days we have able to remove 1340 tonnes of garbage by using an earthmover and six trained workers. But still, much garbage is lying in a pipeline. If the garbage is not been removed it may go back into the lake.” She added.
She further said that the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation had promised to remove the garbage and water hyacinth and provide fencing for the lake. However, the project was yet to take off.
