Landslides, house collapses kill 15 in Brazil

Sao Paulo, December 05: At least 15 people were killed this week in landslides and house collapses in Sao Paulo state, after days of driving rains and high winds, Civil Defense officials said on Friday.

Most of the victims, including five children aged 5-14, perished under landslides triggered by rain-soaked terrain, while three people were dragged out of a house that collapsed in the eastern part of Sao Paulo city, the officials said.

Another person died when his house collapsed in the central part of Sao Paulo, they added.

The region of Sao Paulo has been hit by continuous rainstorms since Tuesday, with more than 170 people evacuated so far from their homes.

In Sao Paulo capital, storms on Thursday snarled traffic along hundreds of miles of streets and canceled two main railway lines serving the city.

Weather forecasters said at one point on Thursday, as much rain fell in four hours on Sao Paulo state normally receives in one week.
