Nalgonda: Telugu Desam Party (TDP) vice president and former MP Lal Jan Basha died in a road accident Thursday at Narketpally in Andhra Pradesh. He was 56.
Basha was coming to Hyderabad from Guntur when the four-wheeler in which he was travelling hit a divider in Nalgonda district, about 80 km from here. The driver was injured, police said.
Basha was the most prominent Muslim leader of TDP and played a key role in the party for nearly three decades.
He was elected to Lok Sabha from Guntur in 1991 and served as a member of Rajya Sabha.Basha was on his way to his hometown Guntur when the SUV he was travelling in hit the road divider and turned turtle, killing him on the spot.The vehicle driver sustained serious injuries, police said.
Basha was elected to Lok Sabha from Guntur in 1991 in a stunning victory over veteran parliamentarian Acharya N G Ranga.
Basha is the second senior TDP leader to die in a road accident in recent months. Former union minister K. Yerran Naidu was killed in Srikakulam district in November last year.
Basha’s death plunged the main opposition party into a gloom. TDP chief N. Chandrababu Naidu termed Basha’s death a huge loss for the party.
