Lakhs of flags, tons of trash cleared

Hyderabad, April 05: The staff of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) have removed a whopping 8.02 lakh flags and 5,035 banners from the Old City.

The job is unfinished as yet and 16 special teams with additional vehicles have been deployed to complete it as early as possible.

The civic staff also cleared about 1,521 tonnes of garbage on Sunday from various parts of the Old City. Garbage piled up for the past week as it could not be cleared on time due curfew.

The tasks have been taken up on a warfooting following instructions from GHMC Commissioner Sameer Sharma who visited the curfew-bound localities of the Old City on Sunday.

Due to prohibitory orders, about 40 percent of the municipal staff was unable to report for duties like sweeping and transportation of garbage in circles 4, 5 and 7.

GHMC Additional Commissioner (Health and Sanitation) Aleem Basha said they arranged pick-up and drop facility to the municipal staff and provided them with curfew passes to go about their routine tasks.

Additionally, 275 workers, two earthmovers, four Front End Loaders, 10 DCM vans, 31 tippers and 11 sweeping machines were engaged to clear the garbage in curfewclapmed areas. The cleaning operation will continue on Monday.
