Lake police save 2 women

Hyderabad, February 09: Vaishnavi can barely walk though she kept on following her brother Ramu running all over the Lake View police station. While both kept playing without a care in the world, they had no inkling why they were there. Their mother Jayamma sat in one corner, undergoing a counselling session by policemen while father Narasimhulu sat outside the police station, wearing a grim look.

Just minutes ago, both Vaishnavi and Ramu were witness to the suicide bid by their mother. Jayamma took the kids close to the murky waters and decided to jump, leaving behind the children. But before she could take the extreme step, a passer-by spotted her and informed the matter to Lake police. Re-launched eight days ago, Lake police stopped the sixth suicide bid in the lake waters on Tuesday.

Jayamma, a housewife decided to end her life following a spat with her husband on Monday night. She boarded a bus and went straight to Hussain Sagar on Tuesday morning. She removed her Thali (chain) and kept it in the pocket of her four-year-old son and attempted to commit suicide by leaping into the water. However, a passer-by noticed her and brought the matter to the notice of Lake police.

“The passer-by started shouting loudly and alerted the Lake View constable who was passing along the road. Immediately, she was brought out and later taken to the police station along with her children. During questioning Jayamma said strained relations with her husband Narasimhulu had made her to attempt suicide,’’ Lake police inspector Srinivas told Express. Jayamma, however, claimed she did not intend to force her two children- Ramu (4) and Vishnavi (2), to commit suicide. Lake police station was re-launched on January 30, specifically to control suicide bids in Hussain Sagar, besides curbing eve-teasing and rash driving.

In less than two hours after the incident, yet another woman aged about 45, attempted to commit suicide in Tank Bund. She was also rescued by the patrolling Lake police. The woman, Elamma said she was abused by her employer who was allegedly harassing her by not paying salary and not recording her attendance. Both Jayamma and Elamma were counselled by Lake police and allowed to leave.

In the last few days, ever since the police station started functioning with a force of 30 policemen, six persons have been rescued. “All of the rescued were counselled to find out reasons behind taking the extreme decision,” Srinivas added. In one case, a women even threatened that she would commit suicide again, if they disclosed to anyone about her suicide attempt.

Police said three roads- Necklace road to Sanjeevaiah park, Necklace road to Lumbini park and Tank Bund would be patrolled round-the-clock to stop such incidents. Police are patrolling on horses, motorcycles and cycles.
