Lakdi-ka-pul bridge to ease traffic jams

Hyderabad, January 14: Motorists who use the heavily congested road over-bridge (RoB) at Lakdi-ka-pul will get major relief from traffic bottlenecks soon.

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and the South Central Railway are going to build a two-lane parallel bridge at the place, making the road four-lane. The stretch has become a major traffic bottleneck as thousands of vehicles converge at this point from two major arterial roads- Nampally and Secunderabad, to go towards Mehdipatnam, Banjara Hills, Ameerpet and Begumpet.

The state government is due to release of Rs 9 crore towards the works in 3 to 4 days. The coordination committee, formed recently under directions of chief minister Kiran Kumar Reddy to oversee the 100-day plan, inspected the Lakadi-ka-pul to Nirankari Bhavan road recently.

GHMC additional commissioner K Dhananjaya Reddy along with additional commissioner of police (Traffic) CV Anand told reporters that designs for the bridge have been finalised by the SCR. The bridge, 11 m wide and 125 m long would be 6.5 m above the railway tracks.

GHMC has acquired 1,600 sq yds lands with the Water Board agreeing to shift water pipelines immediately. Road-widening from Nirankari Bhavan to Ayodhya Junction will be taken up. Though the road belongs to National Highways, GHMC will relay the dug road.

As the KCP guesthouse and Model House are prone to water stagnation, it has been decided to repair the stretch. Service roads from Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital to Rethi Bowli Junction would be taken up by Roads and Buildings department for Rs 6 crore. Under 100 days programme, GHMC has earmarked Rs 150 crore for various development works.
