‘Kuwait’s anti-Iran claims, US scenario’

Kuwait, April 04: An Iranian lawmaker says Kuwait’s recent claim that it has dismantled an Iranian spy cell is an American scenario to authorize the crackdown on the ongoing popular movements in the region.

“Regarding the current popular movements in Muslim countries and the Persian Gulf littoral states, including Bahrain, the Westerners are trying to persuade regional governments that Iran is the factor behind the unrests and that such protests are not popular,” said a member of the National Security and Foreign Policy Commission of the Iranian Parliament (Majlis), Hossein Naqavi Hosseini, on Sunday.

He added that such “unprincipled” claims and attitude are part of a US scenario which is being implemented by Kuwait, Majlis news agency (ICANA) reported.

An informed source at Iran’s Foreign Ministry on Wednesday refuted as “irresponsible and baseless” allegations by Kuwaiti judiciary officials, saying, “This issue is not related to the Islamic Republic of Iran or any of our country’s embassy staff.”

The source went on to say that the row started last year when the accusations were first made by Kuwait and raised questions about the purpose behind renewing the claims.

Earlier on Sunday, Head of Iran’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi said that Kuwait leveled such allegations against Iran to “deviate the public opinion of regional countries and the Muslim world” from the brutal massacre of Bahraini people and expressed hope that Kuwait would change its policies on Iran based on “its national interests and interests of the region.”

The Bahraini police, backed by Saudi and UAE troops, have intensified the clampdown on anti-government protesters who demand a constitutional monarchy.

Rights groups and opposition parties say hundreds of people have been detained or have gone missing since the protests began in Bahrain in mid-February, with at least 25 people killed and 1,000 others wounded so far.
