Different Muslims groups of Kurnool district have joined hands to launch a signature and post-card campaign to protect ongoing 4% Muslim Reservation in Andhra Pradesh State.
The campaign is aimed at urging Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu to ask Backward Classes Commission to gather fresh data on backwardness of Muslims in the State so as to protect the ongoing 4% Muslim reservation. “When the State Government has constituted Justice Manjunath Commission to study backwardness of Kapu community, why the same Commission cannot be assigned the task of rectifying the gap pointed out by AP High Court while squashing the 4% Muslim reservation?” asked MEM leader Khalid.
The Muslim Empowerment Movement (MEM), an umbrella organisation of different active groups of Kunool, initiated the campaign on the occasion of “Deen Bachao, Dastoor Bachao” event organised by All India Muslim Personal Law Board. Kurnool Zakath and Charitable Trust has announced its complete support for the campaign. MEM members Khaild, Amanullah, Nayeem, Shartaj, Shoiab, Hidayath and others have formed special teams to collect signatures. So far, 5,000 signatures have been collected while 1,000 post cards were sent to the Chief Minister.
The campaign has received tremendous response in Kurnool districts with all sections of the society extending their support in favour Muslim reservation. The MEM has urged the Chief Minister to take all possible steps to strongly contest the 4% Muslim reservation case in the Supreme Court. However, they said that the government would need fresh data on Muslim backwardness in the State. Therefore, the BC Commission should be assigned the tasks of collecting the data.
The MEM and other Muslim groups have decided to extend the campaign to all 13 districts of Andhra Pradesh. (INN)
