K’taka Minister resigns following defeat in assembly bypoll

Bangalore, August 31: Karnataka Minister for Housing and Muzarai V Somanna today tendered his resignation owning moral responsibility following his defeat in the assembly by-election held on August 18.

Mr Somanna submitted his resignation to the Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa at the State Secretariat.

Mr Yeddyurappa said a decision on the Minister’s resignation would be taken by evening.

Mr Somanna, who was elected on Congress ticket from Govindarajanagara Assembly constitutency last year, was made the minister, after he switched over to the BJP, following the party’s alleged attempts to lure the legislators from other parties in the name of ‘Operation Lotus’.

The Minister, however, lost the bypoll at the hands of Congress candidate Priyakrishna by a margin of over 5,000 votes. Opposition were on their toes, demanding Mr Somanna’s resignation.
