Accusing the City Police of having failed to provide necessary security to an important place of worship like Mahankali Temple at Lal Darwaza, Telangana Political Joint Action Committee chairman Prof M Kodandaram on Friday demanded that the State Government take immediate measures for the protection of all religious places in the Telangana region.
Talking to reporters after visiting the Mahankali Temple, where unidentified persons conducted the theft of antique gold and diamond jewellery two days ago, Prof Kondandaram demanded that stern action should be taken against the culprits. He said those involved in the act of theft have desecrated the temple and should be severely punished. Taking a dig at the City Police, he said that while the police officials register cases against Telangana activists who conduct peaceful rallies, they failed to catch the thieves even after two days.
Prof Kodandaram also demanded that the State Government declare the Bonalu as the official festival. He said it was the responsibility of the government to protect the culture, festivals and places of worship of Telangana people.
Earlier, the Mahankali Temple was re-opened for the devotees after a gap of two days. A special pooja was also organised in the temple wherein hundreds of devotees participated. Endowments Department Assistant Commisioner Ramana Murthy, Temple Committee chairman Mahesh Goud, TUF leader Vimalakka, MLC Dilip Kumar, TNGOs leader Srinivas Goud and others were also present.
