KMC to take various measures to solve water scarcity

Kolkata, August 10: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has taken a number of short and long term measures to address water scarcity of the metropolis, Mayor Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharjee said here today.

After a delegation of Kolkata Nagarik Sammelan met him to inform him about the severe water crisis in southern areas like Behala, Garden Reach, Jadavpur, Tollygunj and Dhakuria, Bhattacharjee said about the various measures being taken.

He said 15 new deep tubewells and 1000 hand tubewells would be installed and 25 old deep tubewells would be replaced and the drinking water pipe line would be extended by about 100 km in those areas.

Besides these short term measures, the KMC has also planned several long term ones, the mayor said.

These included a new 15 million gallon per day (MGD) treatment plant at Garden Reach at a cost of Rs 36 crore, a 30 MGD plant at Dhapa and restoration of pipeline from Palta treatment plant to Tala tank.

The last two projects costing Rs 215 crore and Rs 305 crore respectively would come up under the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission, he said.
