‘Scarves in Solidarity’ event will be organised by several groups on Friday, one week on from the devastating attack on two Christchurch mosques. The organisers have invited New Zealanders to wear headscarves on that day to show support to the grieving Muslim community.
Raewyn Rasch is the organiser of the Scarves in Solidarity event. The Islamic Women’s Council hailed the plan saying it is an “amazing idea”. According to Ms Rasch, the event is open to everyone in New Zealand and is a “symbolic gesture”.
Another event ‘Headscarf for Harmony’ has been planned for Friday, inviting Kiwis to wear a headscarf or head covering at “work, school or play”.
‘Wear a Headscarf Friday’ is yet another event aimed at women in the Christchurch region and had been supported by the New Zealand Muslim Association. Thousands, on Facebook, have expressed interest in the events.
As reported by News Now, the show of solidarity comes as Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has called for two minutes of silence on Friday and mosques around Auckland have pledged to open their doors to people of all faiths that evening.
