Kiran urges Telangana activists to suspend stir

Hyderabad, March 02: Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy on Tuesday appealed to the Telangana activists to suspend the ongoing agitation and await the Centre’s decision on the statehood issue.

Expressing serious concern over the future of 20 lakh students gearing to write various annual examinations later this month and the adverse impact of the employees’ non-cooperation agitation, he said sufferers in the turmoil were the people and students of the region.

Students’ problem

Referring to the ‘million march’ call by the TRS on Mach 10, the Chief Minister in an informal chat with reporters here on Tuesday said: “I appeal to agitators to enable students to write their examinations. The loss of even one mark can change the fortune of thousands of students. The agitation should be suspended in the interests of the students”.

He said there was no change in the dates of the Intermediate examination. The Minister concerned had already made an announcement about it.

To a question he said: “The Srikrishna Committee has submitted its report and it is for the Central government to take further action. It is planning to hold an all-party meeting on that issue. Let us all wait for the outcome.”

Petitions galore

Admitting that the non-cooperation movement by the employees in the region had impacted the day-to-day functioning of government offices, he said on an average 50,000 petitions were received in Telangana on a weekly basis. “Because of the agitation, the grievances are not being redressed,” he said and expressed the hope that the impasse would be settled in a day or two.

“The Group of Ministers already held four to five meetings with the unions. In a day or two we are confident of finding a solution. There are one or two issues which the Centre has to decide,” he noted.

On the boycott of the budget session by the Telangana Congress MLAs, he said, barring some, many legislators attended the proceedings today. To another question, he admitted that there were some problems of coordination among the Congress MLAs.
