Kiran promises more funds for BCs

Hyderabad, April 12: Chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy on Monday underlined his commitment to the upliftment of the weaker sections in the state and said it was not mere “vote bank politics”.

He promised allocation of more funds for backward classes’ welfare in addition to the budgetary allocation of Rs 1,422 crore for this year.

He compared statistics and said that in 2003-04, the government had provided only Rs 94 crores as scholarships to BC students while the present government has allotted Rs 1743 crore and has spent Rs 3,600 crores for the welfare of 28 lakh BC students this year.

Speaking at the 185th birth anniversary celebrations of Jyothirao Phule organised by the Backward Classes Welfare department here on Monday.

APCC president D Srinivas urged chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy to declare the birth anniversary of Jyotirao Phule as an annual holiday.

He said he would forward a representation by BC leaders to him. Jyothirao Phule’s birth anniversary was celebrated at Gandhi Bhavan on Monday.

The PCC chief and minister for Backward Classes Welfare Basavaraju Saraiah garlanded Phule’s photo and paid tributes to him.
