Kiran Bedi calls for change in mindset of people

Expressing shock over the rape of a five-year-old girl, former Indian Police Service (IPS) officer and activist Kiran Bedi on Saturday called for a change in the mindset of the people, and asked the parents to inculcate the right values in their son.

“Today, we are saying that we are shocked and sad, but did any of the lawmakers talk about the law against the rape in their constituency. Did they make the people aware or did they educate them. Did they conduct any corner meetings? In the corner meetings, did they explain the people that there is a new anti-rape law?” asked Bedi.

“Did they meet the parents or attach with any social leadership so that they can inculcate right values in their sons. We say that we should handle girls and girls should be protected. What about boys? They should be left to become anti social elements. These vagabond boys later become vagabond men,” she added.

Meanwhile, BJP President Rajnath Singh hit out at the ruling Congress Party, and said that no lessons have been learnt from the past incidents of rape.

“The government has faced on several occasions the anger of people. However, no concrete action has been taken to curb such incidents. However, there are no words to condemn the recent rape of the five year old child,” he said.

Section 144 has been imposed at the India Gate here as the people have turned up in large numbers to vent their ire against the Congress-led UPA Government and Sheila Dikshit-led Delhi Government over the rising cases of crime against the feminine gender.

Protestors have gathered outside Congress President Sonia Gandhi”s official 10, Janpath residence and Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde”s residence here.

Protests also took place outside AIIMS and Delhi Police Headquarters today demanding justice for the victim and punishment to policemen who allegedly did not help locate the girl who went missing on April 15.

Activists belonging to the Aam Aadmi Party and SFI protested outside the Delhi Police Headquarters here, alleging police apathy in the case, while others staged a demonstration outside AIIMS and expressed their solidarity with the girl.

Shinde has promised tough action against the cops who allegedly tried to hush up the case by offering money to the victim”s parents.

“An inquiry is going on to find out if there was any lapse on the part of police. We will take action against the policemen who are found to be guilty. We are waiting for the report. Give us some time, we will take action,” he told mediapersons here.

Shinde described the incident as very serious, and said there is a need to be alert to check such crimes in the future.

The Home Minister said he was not fully aware of the present condition of the victim.

Shinde further said the accused person had been arrested and will be brought to Delhi.

The doctor treating the five-year-old rape victim at the AIIMS today said that the girl is stable and is responding to medical treatment. (ANI)
