Riyadh, February 13: Saudi Arabia on Saturday welcomed the peaceful transition of power in Egypt after Hosni Mubarak stepped down as president of the country on Friday following 18 days of anti-government protests.
In its first official statement after the dramatic events in Cairo on Thursday night, the Kingdom expressed its hope that Egyptian armed forces would be able to restore peace, stability and tranquility in the country.
The Kingdom also believed that the transfer of power to a military council “would lead to the formation of a national government, realizing the hopes and aspirations of the Egyptian people to achieve security, stability and economic prosperity.”
The Kingdom hoped that Egypt would continue to play its historic role in the Arab, Islamic and international arena.
