Hyderabad, November 04: With the city skyline being fast occupied by multistoried buildings and trees being cut in the name of road widening, one rarely gets to see birds amidst the concrete jungle that our city has become today.
As a result many children have never seen more than a few kinds of birds. To acquaint students with the different types of birds, the Zoology Department of Madina Degree College recently organised an exhibition showcasing different types of birds titled Psittacula.
Pscittacula is the scientific genus name of parrots. The exhibition showcased a fascinating array of real, live birds, with the parrot taking centre stage.
Exotic birds such as partridges, finches, love birds, white quails, cockatiels and more common ones like pigeons, ducks and sparrows were also seen at the exhibition.
The bird that attracted maximum attention was the fantail, made popular by the Masakali song from the movie Delhi 6.
Groups of giggling girls could be seen cooing the song to the snow-white bird. All the birds were rented for a day from a shop in old city.
Many students at the exhibition were seeing some of the birds for the first time and were curiously enquiring about them.
“Other than crows, pigeons and chickens, I had not see any other bird. Now I have see a whole lot of birds in real life”, says Amatullah Quadri, a student of Madina Public School. Shabana Tarranum, a zoology lecturer at the college says, “There are so many species of birds in nature but we get to see only a few. The purpose of this exhibition is to let people know about all the wonderful birds nature has created”.
Colourful sketches and models of various birds were displayed all over the college. Interesting facts about birds were also illustrated on charts.
Birds were categorized into different groups such as migratory birds, nocturnal birds, flightless birds and pet birds and their traits were explained by the Zoology students of the college.
‘The exhibition has been a fun way to learn zoology.
It will help us remember the vast syllabus better”, says Safia Fatima, a 2nd-year zoology student at Madina Degree College.
The exhibition was an enjoyable and engaging way to learn about nature’s winged wonders.
