Dubai, April 01: The UAE-Japan Cultural Centre will be hosting a charity event this evening at the Dubai Women’s Association Hall in Hamriya, Deira. All proceeds will be passed on to help the victims of Japan’s recent natural disaster.
“We, as a cultural centre, were originally planning a kimono show as part of a cultural exchange programme but we have now decided to focus on raising funds for victims of the recent earthquake and tsunami. This is the first ever relief effort for Japan acknowledged by the Dubai Government under the sponsorship of Shaikh Mohammed b in Rashid Al Maktoum Humanitarian and Charity Estate and Dubai Women’s Association,” said Naoko Kishida, director and founder of the UAE-Japan Cultural Centre.
With Japan’s national dress, the kimono in the spotlight, a series of activities will showcase a range of kimonos for men and women. A brief lecture on the wear and the etiquette while wearing it will follow. Naoko said the highlight of the evening will be a demonstration on how to wear the kimono.
“The kimono looks simple on the outside but there are many hidden belts worn underneath. It requires much elegance and grace from the part of the person who wears it. We will show how to walk, sit, stand up, greet, and receive welcomes while wearing a kimono,” she said.
Despite the fund-raiser being held at a women’s exclusive arena, Naoko said men are more than welcome to attend. Tickets are priced at Dh100 and attendees can buy as many as they wish as the amount collected will be given to charity.
The earthquake and tsunami which took the country by surprise on March 11 took more than 26,000 human lives. One prefecture faces about 18 million tonnes of material waste at the moment, that is generally equivalent of 23 years of annual normal waste, and it will take at least three to five years to clean the area.
