Kidney sale racket: Hiranandani Hospital’s CEO, 4 others arrested

Mumbai: The illegal kidney racket came to light, Mumbai Police has arrested the Chief Executive Officer and the medical director of Dr L H Hiranandani Hospital, along with three other doctors on Tuesday night.

Recently the police has arrested eight people in the case. The arrests were made under Sections 12 and 21 of The Transplantation of Human Organs Act, 1994.

The police had used TOHA sections 12 (no registered medical practitioner shall undertake the removal or transplantation of any human organ unless he has explained, in such manner as may be prescribed, all possible effects, complications and hazards connected with the removal and transplantation to the donor and the recipient respectively).

Deven Bharti, joint police commissioner of law and order, said: “Based on the report of the appropriate authority today (on Tuesday) at 8.30 pm, the Powai police arrested five accused-doctors, of which one is chief executive officer and another is medical director of the Hiranandani Hospital.”

The accused will be produced before the Andheri magistrate’s court today. According to a Powai police official, the arrest was based on a three-member state health inquiry committee report that stated a nephrologist and two urologists were negligent on multiple counts.

The official said, “They did not verify the documents thoroughly due to which their negligence has occurred. They should not have gone ahead with the surgery till they had satisfactory information that the donor and receipent are related. However, they have had a casual attitude and have not performed their duties properly.”
