Reacting to External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid’s comments on the Election Commission and the Supreme Court, Former Congress leader Jagadambika Pal on Thursday said that only a mentally bankrupt person could make such statements.
“He had made derogatory comments about the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi as well. Even Rahul Gandhi had said that he did not approve of such comments,” said Pal.
“Only a mentally bankrupt person can make such comments about the judiciary and the Election Commission. I think he doesn’t have an understanding of the law even after being the law minister of the nation,” he said.
“The manner in which Khurshid is making such comments, and the way Chidambaram and G K Vasan have opted out of contesting these elections, it seems they have already accepted defeat before the elections,” he added.
He further said that if the government did not take any steps against Khurshid, it would be suicidal.
“It seems like they are trying to leave a drowning ship. If the government doesn’t take any action against the way he has put allegations on the judicial system, and the Election Commission, it will prove to be a suicidal step for the government,” he added.
Speaking at an event in London, Khurshid said the Election Commission and the Supreme Court are issuing directions that will only ensure that a party will lose elections and not win them.
Khurshid has slammed the Supreme Court and the Election Commission, saying they direct political parties and parliamentarians to a great extent.
He said directions issued by the Election Commission could only ensure that a party loses an election rather that wins it.
“They are only three and they can decide which word you can use during election campaign. The broad philosophical approach is that you should do and say nothing that wins you an election, you should try your best to lose election,” Khurshid said.
Khurshid also commented on Supreme Court judges and said should stop directing parliamentarians and need to get their act together, according to the news channel.
“Judges sit and they say this is not to happen and of course go to the extent of threatening contempt proceedings against officials. Two judges can say anything about parliamentarians that they will be allowed to contest or not, what kind of affidavit they have to file, what they can do and so on,” he said. (ANI)
