Hyderabad, January 19: Hyderabad has a new Police Commissioner. Abdul Khayyum Khan has been appointed in place of B Prasada Rao. The outgoing Commissioner is posted as Vice- Chairman and Managing Director of the AP State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC).
Former director-general of police and controversial senior IPS officer, S S P Yadav who was MD of the APSRTC till now, will head the little-known Godvari Valley Development Authority.
The other significant transfer is that of East Zone DCP Stephen Ravindra, whose ‘action’ against Osmania University students become controversial. He was shifted to West Zone in place of C Ravi Verma. Meanwhile, the government has posted K V Rajendranath Reddy as the Commissioner of Police of Vijayawada once again. He was earlier suspended after the dramatic escape of Congress MP Lagadapati Rajagopal from the government hospital recently. His suspension was later revoked.
A K Khan, a 1981 batch IPS officer, who was the Additional Director General (law and order), would be replacing Bayyarapu Prasada Rao who took charge in January, 2008. Khan has experience of working in the city and had ealier worked as the traffic boss and also as the Additional Commissioner of Police (coordination) in the Hyderabad Commissionerate. Prasada Rao, on the other hand, completed almost two years of office before he was transferred to the APSRTC.
It is learnt that Prasada Rao sought a transfer. His two-year tenure did not witness any major law and order problem and general elections as well as the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation elections conducted during his term passed off peacefully.
Meanwhile, SSP Yadav’s posting as chairman of the Godavari River Valley Authority is being seen as a direct result of his ‘‘unilateral’’ decision to hike RTC bus fares.
East Zone DCP Stephen Ravindra, who was asked not to interfere in the agitations going on in the Osmania University after the lathicharge on the students, was shifted as the DCP West Zone. DIG AP Special Police Batallions has been made Joint Commissioner of Police (security and coordination) in place of Kripananda Tripathi Ujela.
