Key elements of food security scheme (With BJP blocks Sonia’s food bill, three states roll it out)

Key elements of the ambitious food security scheme launched in Delhi by Congress president Sonia Gandhi which guarantees the poor the right to food:

* Eight hundred million Indians to benefit.

* Out of 10.6 million, 7.3 million people get the right to food in two phases in Delhi.

* If foodgrain is not provided, beneficiaries will get an equivalent ammount transferred to their bank accounts linked to the Aadhar cards.

* Homeless, rag pickers, residents of resettlement colonies will be eligible for the scheme.

* In the first phase, 0.5 million families will get highly subsidised foodgrain.

* Wheat will be available at Rs.2 per kg, rice at Rs.3 per kg and coarse grain at Re.1 per kg.

* Below poverty line, above poverty line and jhuggi (slum) ration card card holders will be included.

* Applications being invited at 200 centres and offices of food and supplies department of Delhi government.

* Food security cards will be issued to people.

* The second phase will be launched in Feb 2014.
