Thiruvananthapuram, February 08:The Congress-led opposition in the Kerala assembly Tuesday staged a walkout alleging that the Left government which has about 100 days left to demit office is on an appointment spree by “stuffing” their supporters in several organizations.
Seeking leave for an adjournment motion on the issue, Congress legislator P.C. Vishnunadh said the government should stop back door appointments of their supporters.
“The newly-created nine state public sector undertakings have all been stuffed with your supporters. The written test was a farce because many got their hall tickets either the previous day or after the examination date. The high court had asked for all jobs in universities in the state to be handed over to the public service commission (PSC), and have you made any efforts to see that this is done?” asked Vishnunadh.
A record 1,919 new jobs have been created in the nine new PSUs. The opposition has been attacking the government for not having a transparent recruitment process.
“The Lok Ayukta has come down heavily on the appointments made to the assistant posts in the Kerala University. Even after several requests, you have not been able to produce the 42,000 answer scripts of those who wrote the examination. The police have also arrested several who got government jobs without writing the Public Service Commission examination,” pointed out Vishnunadh.
Denying the allegations Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan said the opposition was rattled because his government has appointed a record 1.56 lakh people in government jobs since they assumed office in May 2006.
“All the appointments to the nine PSUs are being done in the most transparent manner and reputed agencies are going ahead with the recruitment process. We have created 35,000 new government jobs,” said Achuthanandan.
State Education Minister M.A. Baby hit back by saying that all the university appointments would be filled up by the PSC but before that a lot of procedures had to be adopted.
Deputy leader of opposition G. Karthikeyan led the opposition out of the house following the denial of the adjournment motion.
This is the last session of the present Left government as elections are likely to be held because the term of the present Achuthanandan government ends on May 17.
