Thiruvananthapuram, July 16: Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthandan today said the government would convene a meeting of State Food Minister’s to discuss the issues related to the proposed Food Security Act (FSA) by the Union Government.
Talking to reporters after the weekly Cabinet meeting yesterday, he said the Cabinet had given its approval in this regard and the State government would take initiatives to convene the meeting as the Act would adversely affect many other states in the country.
The conference of Food Minster’s would discuss about the serious situation aroused out following the declaration of the FSA, he added. Alleging that the Central Government’s declared FSA was against the interest of the State, he said that the Center had taken a decision to implement such an Act without considering the concern of the State.
Pointing out that many rules in the Act, including the cutting down of ration quota of the BPL families to 25 kg from the existing 35 kg, fixing the BPL families to 10 lakh and avoiding the APL families from the rationing system, would crush the Public Distributing System in the State.
Though the State had 20 lakh BPL families, the Center at first had reduced it 15 lakh and again cut down its size to 10 lakh, he charged.
