KCR Demands centre to change Polavaram design

TRS supremo and chief minister in waiting of Telangana K Chandrasekhara Rao here on Tuesday reiterated that the Union government should change the design of Polavaram project which is likely to submerge the Telangana region.
Speaking to mediapersons here, Chandrasekhara Rao made it clear that his party was certainly not against the Polavaram project, but they were only opposing its design. He also made it clear that the Telangana State government would not stop the water flowing from Polavaram project into the Andhra region. Recalling that experts have opined that earthquakes might take place in the Polavaram project site, KCR pointed out that already the States of Chattisgarh and Odisha were opposing the Polavaram project. “Therefore, we will also oppose the project”, he added.
KCR disclosed that he has requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi not to take a hasty decision on promulgating an ordinance on the Polavaram project during the first Union cabinet meeting. He also reportedly told the Prime Minister that the Telangana government would knock the doors of Supreme Court for justice if any ordinance on the project was issued hastily. Stating that he had vehemently opposed the ordinance on Polavaram project prepared by the Union Home Ministry, KCR demanded that the Centre drop its decision to issue the ordinance on Polavaram.
He clarified that Article 3 of the Constitution stipulated that changing the borders of any State must be done only after consulting the respective State governments. “There need not be any hurry on the issue. Changing of State borders without consulting the State concerned is undemocratic”, he added. He clarified that it is not proper to merge seven mandals in Bhadrachalam into Andhra Pradesh as Bhadrachalam is part of the Telangana. (NSS)
