Hyderabad: TRS MP K. Kavitha surprised everyone by praising Congress president Sonia Gandhi in Lok Sabha.
Kavitha, who is also the daughter of Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao, lauded the role played by Sonia Gandhi in the formation of separate Telangana State. She made these remarks while participating in a special debate in the House on the occasion of International Women’s Day.
Kavitha stressed on empowerment of women. She said that the government should not confine itself to providing women reservation. Instead, it should play a pro-active role in encouraging women in all walks of life. She expressed concern over the prevalence of child marriages and female feticide. She said such crimes should be dealt with an iron hand.
The Nizamabad MP said that the Telangana Government has constituted “She Teams” to ensure safety of women. She said women have been provided 33% reservation in police recruitments and Rs. 51,000 were being provided for the marriage of poor girls under ‘Kalyana Lakshmi’ and ‘Shaadi Mubarak’ schemes. She also stressed on increase in representation of women in Lok Sabha and State Assemblies. (INN)
