Kavitha blames Dattatraya letter for HCU incident

Demanding to revoke suspension of four students from Hyderabad Central University (HCU), TRS MP Kavitha today attributed the alleged suicide by Dalit student Rohit and suspension of four others to Union Labour Minister Bandaru Dattatreya.

Reacting on the alleged suicide by a Dalit student Rohith which raked up an issue besides Centre reacting so seriously and appointing a two-member committee, Kavitha expressed dismay at the suspension of the students. “Had Dattatreya not written a letter to the Centre, the HCU incident would not have taken place”, she charged. She also expressed concern on the suicide incident which should not have taken place. The suspension of five students by the officials compelled Rohith to resort to extreme step, she alleged. She asked the Union Minister to write a letter to Centre for removal of the suspension to protect the interests of the students and academic year.

Kavitha said, “It was inhuman and illegal to suspend five scholars for their protest in a democratic way. The deceased Rohit and four others were suspended from hostels following clashes between Ambedkar Students Association (ASA) and Akhila Bharatiay Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) in August 2015 over hanging of Mumbai blasts convict Yakub Memon. Kavitha said neither the State government nor TRS party had ever interfered into the affairs of the university and supported the Dalit scholars for getting their suspension revoked. However, she said, Dattatreya wrote to the Union Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani to get the students suspended while a committee inquired into the incidents only recommended only a warning. “Dattatreya was solely responsible for the death of the scholar, who had undergone immense mental disturbance and agony due to the university action. We demand the revocation of the suspension on the remaining four scholars before more serious situation arises on the campus,” she said. (NSS)
